Two ways into the white

Late November is the knife-edge of the season: the lakes are deciding whether to freeze, the first real snow is arriving, and almost nobody else is out there.

Wild-ice skating expedition

Nordic skates, a backpack, and kilometres of clear black ice where you can see the stones on the bottom. Silent, fast, a bit unreal.

The adventure alternative: Nordic skiing

No safe ice anywhere? Then we click into skis and go touring off-track through birch forest and over open fells, with a fire, hot lingonberry drink and a view nobody else has bothered to walk to. Not a consolation prize: a great experience in its own right.

Three quiet weekdays chasing the first black ice of the season, while the rest of the world is at work.

Long weekend

Fri 27 – Mon 30 Nov · 4 days

Friday to Monday in the mountains. Arrive Thursday night, first ice call Friday morning.

  • Nordic skis and boots if we switch to skiing

The full hunt

The whole week. Seven days to find the one perfect ride, and plenty of time to follow the cold wherever it goes.
